Superhero MMORPG

City of Villains

City of Villains was NCSoft's free-to-play companion game to City of Heroes, letting players build highly customizable villains from thousands of power and costume options to contest the Rogue Isles against their heroic counterparts. It introduced expanded PvP, Supergroup bases with anti-raid countermeasures, and villain-specific mission types like bank robberies and Mayhem Missions. City of Villains was eventually folded fully into City of Heroes, which NCSoft shut down on November 30, 2012.

Why you might like it

  • Thousands of power and costume combinations let players build a truly unique supervillain rather than picking from fixed archetypes.
  • Supergroup bases doubled as player housing with defensive traps and anti-raid countermeasures for PvP-minded groups.
  • Expanded PvP zones and villain-exclusive mission types (bank robberies, Mayhem Missions) gave a distinct playstyle from its hero-side companion game.

Things to consider

  • City of Villains and its parent game City of Heroes were permanently shut down by NCSoft on November 30, 2012.
  • Unofficial fan-run servers (such as Homecoming) have since revived the game under limited licenses, but this is not the original commercial service.
  • As a villain-focused companion title, some content required owning or accessing City of Heroes as well.
