Action MMO

Infantry Online

Infantry Online, billed as the world's first massively multiplayer online isometric shooter, launched in 1999 from the SubSpace team at Harmless Games and was later acquired and operated by Sony Online Entertainment, at one point supporting over 140,000 players. SOE shut the official servers down in March 2012, after which the community relaunched it independently as Free Infantry, which is still run and financed by its player community today and debuted on Steam in April 2024 under license.

Why you might like it

  • Players interested in one of the earliest true MMO shooters, predating most of the genre by years.
  • Fans of community-preserved games — Free Infantry has kept the title alive and financially self-sustaining for over a decade after its official shutdown.
  • Anyone drawn to the game's distinctive zone variety, from capture-the-flag to Newtonian-physics space-fleet combat.

Things to consider

  • The original Sony-operated service has been closed since March 2012; today's Infantry is a fan-run, licensed continuation rather than the original commercial service.
